A Majority
Wanted Trump Convicted
A new poll released from ABC News shows that most Americans wanted Mr. Trump convicted; however that is not what occurred in the Senate. The Senate chose to acquit Mr. Trump of inciting an insurrection against the United States of America. We should remember this statistic senators who voted to impeach represented 61.6 percent of Americans, those who chose to acquit represent 38.2 percent of Americans. This shows the flaws of the Senate. What is clear now is that the Senate is fundamentally a flawed institution.
Justice isn’t over yet for Mr. Trump. Today the NAACP filed a lawsuit arguing that the former president conspired with two domestic terror organizations to prevent the electoral college count. In particular, the case alleges that Trump and Rudolph Giuliani, along with the proud boys and oath keepers, violated the 1871 Ku Klux Klan Act. The act prevents interference with congressional duties. Mr. Trump is also under investigation in Georgia and the state of New York.
While Mr. Trump may attempt to hold onto power within the Republican Party, it is difficult to see a path for him to do so if he is out of money and behind bars. Some have argued that Mr. Trump is not the future of “Trumpism,” but the end is one of the children or one of the spouses of the children. This would require Donald Trump to face the reality that he doesn’t have what it takes to be a national arena leader. Indeed, his family members will run, but will the Republican Party continue to hold up the family that nearly got members of Congress killed.
While I doubt “Trumpism” is going away, it is more likely to transform itself into something else. It will likely find a new leader and someone more intelligent than the entire Trump family, meaning Trump 2.0 will be much more deadly and more skilled.
A note on the language here, Trump 2.0 will be deadlier. Choosing that language was difficult because we are in a moment where words matter, as they always have. When looking at the data, had the leader of America been willing to engage in truth-telling, people would still be alive. Don’t believe me. Just look at the COVID-19 death rates.
