Hold them Accountable
When thinking about the modern Republican party (authoritarian movement), one must think to themselves, if not aloud, what is their main organizing principle as an organization? Fiscal conservatism went out the window a long time ago with that political party, limited government only if it means a massive government so long as a republican is president.
The central organizing principle of the modern political right is not anything that any American from coast to coast should be pleased with or want any part of, its grievance. The entire moment we are in as a nation comes down to one political party wishing to keep resentment alive so long as they can ensure that the majority sees no relief or progress in America.
For the past two days, the House Minority whip Kevin McCarthy has been holding meetings with an individual who plays best to those souls who are leading with the grievance. McCarthy has held meetings with the Republican Party’s previous failed presidential candidate. Astonishingly, Mr. McCarthy refuses to ditch the one-term presidential loser. What is shown is that Kevin McCarthy is not done yet with the politics of grievance. While Senate minority leader McConnell wants to move on and forget about Trump (mind you, he almost got every congress member killed by inciting a coup), McCarthy refuses. In large part because McCarthy, like many in the modern authoritarian movement, realize that they can sell the nation to the devil so long as they can somehow enjoy a short term win.
Every single one of us, regardless of political party, must be willing to recognize the moment we live in; if we fail to hold these people accountable, our democracy will die.
We must insist on the government holding those who provided aid in the attempted coup accountable, regardless of status in American society.
