The Week Ahead

Here is what to watch for this week, coronavirus continues to rage in the United States, and on Tuesday the Biden administration would have to officially inform states if the Public Health Emergency declaration is going to expire in July. The extension has been granted now numerous times and in ninety day increments. Not extending the public health emergency declaration could have disastrous effects as those on the lower rungs of the economic ladder would lose their health coverage, since the extension allows for people to not have to renew their health benefits for the duration of the public health emergency. This is one of the few things those in the media are not discussion what happens if the emergency declaration is lifted. It would create a huge problem for many states as county offices are not adequately staffed to deal with people sliding on and off of certain medical benefits.
Pennsylvanians go to the polls this week along with those in several other states, it will be a key test for Mr. Trump to see if he continues to have any staying power in the Republican Party. My hope is that once all of the votes are counted Republicans will realize that the people of Pennsylvania have rejected the celebrity doctor and his hand picked candidate for Governor, Mr. Mastriano who participated gleefully in the events that took place on January sixth.
On the other hand if Mastriano is the nominee, Democrats will have an easy time getting current Attorney General Joshua Shapiro elected. If Republicans in Pennsylvania reject the celebrity doctor and instead choose a different candidate for the United States Senate, whomever the Democrats nominate for the Senate should have an easier time defeating the nominee especially if it plays out the way the polling is showing which is that Kathy Barnette is going to be the nominee.
As I have advocated numerous times Democrats should think pragmatically about the Senate race and nominate Conor Lamb, who will easily defeat any candidate that the Republicans nominate for the United States Senate. If the nominee is someone else for Democrats it is likely that the race is closer.
