The other Investigations into Trump
The investigations into former President Donald Trump are many. Multiple investigations and legal proceedings have been launched into his conduct and actions before and during his presidency.
Investigations into Trump before his presidency
Before becoming president, Donald Trump was a controversial figure with a long history of legal disputes and investigations. Here are some of the investigations he was involved in before his presidency:
Trump University: In 2013, the New York Attorney General's office filed a lawsuit against Trump University, alleging that it had defrauded students by making false promises about its courses. The case was settled for $25 million after Trump became president.
Trump Foundation: The New York Attorney General's office also launched an investigation into the Trump Foundation, alleging that it had violated state charity laws. The foundation was eventually dissolved in 2019, and Trump was ordered to pay $2 million in damages.
Sexual misconduct allegations: During the 2016 presidential campaign, multiple women came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against Trump. Trump denied the allegations, and the cases were eventually dismissed or settled out of court.
Investigations into Trump during his presidency
During his presidency, Donald Trump faced several investigations and legal proceedings. Here are some of the most notable ones:
Mueller investigation: In May 2017, Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and any possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. The investigation lasted for two years and resulted in the indictment of several Trump associates, but they did not find sufficient evidence to charge Trump with a crime.
Impeachment: Trump was impeached twice during his presidency in December 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress related to his dealings with Ukraine. Then again, in January 2021, for incitement of insurrection associated with the storming of the Capitol on January 6. He was acquitted both times by the Senate.
Georgia election interference: In February 2021, prosecutors in Georgia opened a criminal investigation into Trump's attempts to overturn the state's election results.
Financial investigations: Prosecutors in New York also conduct multiple investigations into Trump's business and financial dealings, including tax and bank fraud.
What could these investigations mean for Trump's future?
Republican primary voters are likely to stand behind Donald Trump regardless of the investigations into him. However, it damages his electability overall, especially if he is convicted of a crime.
The case that could do the most damage to Donald Trump is the Georgia election interference case, along with the Federal investigation into the incitement of insurrection. Everyone should remember that a pardon only applies to federal offenses, not state crimes.
One hopes that Donald Trump's indictment will end his menacing the Republic however, his brand of neo-nationalist politics will be with the American people for quite some time. Significant because the vast majority of Republicans have forever been changed by the ilk that is Trump.
