Twitter

The problem with Technology

Twitter, the social media company many have come to cherish, including me, has dealt with numerous issues. The first is the erratic new CEO Elon Musk, who appears hell-bent on ensuring the neo-fascist movement gets here quicker than ever. Musk took the liberty to reinstate the former twice-impeached terrorist inspiring President back to the platform to haunt our lives for many more years. Are there any adults left on Twitter? Musk, who attempted to negotiate world peace by tweet and then threatened to cancel star link, a group of satellites that provide internet access to those with little access, relented after many called him out for his childish antics.

Musk's attempt to negotiate with a hostile foreign power should have triggered a United States Department of Justice investigation. Currently, the Department of Justice has not indicated opening an investigation into Musk for violations of the Logan Act. The Logan Act prevents American citizens from negotiating with foreign governments having a dispute with the United States.

Musk posted a poll on Twitter asking users to comment on if Mr. Trump should be invited back to the social networking site. The majority responded yes, which Mr. Musk took as the right move. Sometimes the majority must lose, but this also points to a more significant issue with Twitter, the issue of leadership.

The adults at Twitter have left. They forgot to take the toddler back to his parents, and now that toddler is running the place. It is time for those who use Twitter to be adults. As I advocated for in other moments of crisis concerning technology companies, it is up to the user to opt-in or to opt out of participating in the dopamine hit. Twitter users who are rightfully opposed to the vile that Mr. Trump and now Mr. Musk are fans of need to opt out of Twitter.

Numerous other social media companies are available, and not all of those companies are owned by Meta, formally known as Facebook, which the Russian Government used to interfere in American and other elections. The fascinating book "How Civil Wars Start" pointed out that nations with a polity that uses social companies are much more fractured than those without the scourge of "technological innovation."

The American citizen must now choose what path they'd like to embark on, one where social media continues to dominate and the direction of our nation continues to wither away, or the way that many chose in the midterm elections a continued renewing of American Democracy.
